Strength and Femininity

“Strength + Femininity” was inspired by the idea of strength as it relates to perceptions around womanhood and femininity. So often, our society separates women from perspectives of strength, resilience and power. Even though in the past, women were seen as both protectors and wisdom keepers. By interviewing members of the bodybuilding community, I wanted to challenge some of the misconceptions around femininity being associated with weakness. I also wanted to challenge some of the negative perceptions around women bodybuilders, such as their being “manly”, hardened and guarded. This series aims to redefine femininity as a marker of strength, which empowers and uplifts the individual. I believe that if femininity was more often embraced by both women AND men, that we could begin to re-establish a sacred balance within ourselves.

In this photo series, I wanted to capture each person in a way that showcases their softness and vulnerability, while still celebrating their physical strength. It was important for me to portray the bonds between sisterhood and motherhood, and to show the role that support plays in strength and growth. I spoke with each person about their experiences with bodybuilding and how it has shaped their views of femininity.
